The Calomarde waterfall

A twenty-metre drop of the Fuente del Berro stream over moss-covered rock, beside the ruins of an old flour mill. It sits right by the road, 2 km from the house — and in winter it turns into a curtain of ice.

The visit

Short, easy and very rewarding: perfect as an afternoon stroll or with kids.

  1. 01

    The upper viewpoint

From the car park by the A-1704, a waymarked path gets you face to face with the waterfall in five minutes. It's the classic view, with the plunge pool below and the mill beside it.

  2. 02

The path down to the pool

A stepped path with wooden railings descends to the foot of the waterfall, so you can take in its full height from below. The stone gets slippery when wet: take it slowly.

  3. 03

    The Molino Viejo

The ruins of the old flour mill that once harnessed the waterfall give it its name. Its walls still stand by the stream, a few steps from the viewpoint.

  4. 04

    In winter, ice

During the sierra's hard frosts the waterfall partially or completely freezes over. The curtain of icicles is one of the most sought-after images in the Sierra de Albarracín.

Tips

When to go
The best flow comes with the spring thaw and after rainy spells; by late summer it can run low. Early mornings and late afternoons bring softer light and fewer people.
In winter
During cold snaps it freezes over and the sight is unique. Wrap up well and watch out for ice patches on the way down.
With kids
A great outing with children: short, waymarked and with a picnic area by the car park. Just keep an eye on them on the descent to the pool.
Parking
Signposted parking area right by the A-1704, at the foot of the waterfall. It's a five-minute walk from the car to the viewpoint.
